Why is Nomina a cereal - part 1, BARLEY
Cereal porridge Nomina. That's the full name of every porridge from Nominal. The word "cereal" is completely trivial for some, but others get lost under the onslaught of various cereals. Many times when selling porridge, we have encountered the response to the question of what kind of porridge the customer wants, cereal. When we then explained that all cereals are cereals, both parties laughed. So "cereal" is a synonym for the word cereal. And there can be a whole range of cereals.
Cereals belong botanically to the family of grasses. They are grasses. Their fruits are grains of various shapes and sizes. From a large grain of corn to a tiny grain of Abyssinian millet or teff, which is the size of a poppy seed. Some cereals can be processed in whole grain form, when the bran and germ are also used for consumption, while some cannot (e.g. millet). The bran of these species is simply not eaten.

Let's start with barley.
Barley is one of the crops that have been used for human nutrition since ancient times. And when I say since ancient times, I mean ancient times, because barley is one of the first cereals that man cultivated for his livelihood.Therefore, we are not surprised by the findings from ancient Egypt, nor from other ancient cultures across the world. That it was the diet of gladiators and soldiers is a well-known fact today. Barley porridge was a common part of the diet. It gave strength. And not only porridge. Barley decoctions served as a substitute for infants, to strengthen the seriously ill or convalescents. It is true that wheat has displaced it more into the position of a feed grain or as a raw material for the production of beer and whiskey (barley malt). But currently, like other crops of "our ancestors", it is experiencing a renaissance. We can no longer find it only as groats in a stew or vegetable stews, but there is also an increase in baked goods containing barley. It remains one of the most consumed cereals in the world. Evidence of its importance for ancient cultures is the use of barley grains as a unit of weight or as a means of payment.
Barley fiber, potassium, folic acid and vitamin B content, as well as the absence of cholesterol - these are factors that help support the health of our heart. Barley fiber consists of both soluble and insoluble components. The peculiarity of barley is that the fiber is contained in the entire grain, not just in the coating layers. Of course, the intake of insoluble fiber in the diet supports the activity of the digestive tract, helps prevent constipation and reduces the risk of colon cancer. Soluble fiber helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and also contributes to reducing the absorption of glucose after a meal. It is therefore also important in the prevention of type II diabetes. It contains polysaccharides known as beta-glucans. Today, this is no longer a foreign concept to many, and many people consume extracts from oyster mushrooms, which also contain beta-glucans, to strengthen the immune system. Beta-glucans are currently undergoing various studies to examine their effects on human health.
No food is a cure-all in itself, but we can do a lot for our health by choosing the right diet. Barley definitely belongs in a balanced diet (unless other health reasons prevent it). You can eat black Kuba or have porridge with barley for breakfast (Nomina barley, multi-grain and trip cereal porridge).
