Christmas fruit bread (gluten-free)

Fruit bread – a fragrant Advent gift from travel.

Many Czech tourists take home a typical Christmas pastry – fruit bread – as a souvenir from their Advent trips to Austria or Germany. This delicious alternative to classic cookies or stollen is not only beautiful to look at, but also tastes great. And the best part is that you can easily bake it at home.

  1. Cut the figs into pieces, mix with the raisins and pieces of candied peel and let stand for several hours mixed with rum and spices.
  2. Mix the dough and add the fruit portion to it. The weight of the dough and the weight of the fruit portion should be approximately in a ratio of 1:1. Finally, add the hazelnuts. Let the mixture rest for a while. Then fill a well-greased mold for bishop's bread. Cover the mold with the dough and place it in a preheated oven (about 30 °C) so that the dough rises better. Bake at 180 °C for about 45 minutes. To make the surface of the bread shiny, you can brush it with a beaten egg or, shortly before baking, brush the surface of the bread with syrup or honey diluted with water and bake for a while longer.

Our tip: Choose the composition of the fruit portion and the ratio of ingredients according to your personal taste. The recipe does not contain milk, eggs or any other added sugar (except for the fruit). We can also combine other dried fruit variants with prunes, apricots or cranberries.
